Cast Iron Hibachi Grill - Cooks Outdoor Style on a Small Scale

Many cast iron Hibachi grills have a large cooking surface which has been preseasoned against weather and heat or fire damage. Using a Charcoal Barbeque Grill Safely

Even with the proliferation of propane, natural gas, or other gas-fueled barbeque grills, old-style charcoal barbeque grills still remain a popular and economic cookout option. Charcoal barbecue grills are far less expensive than gas grills for the most part, and they are not as inconvenient to use as many who have converted to gas grills believe. You need only know the right way to use charcoal BBQ grills.

BBQ charcoal grills come in several variants, from the traditional large pan type to the small tabletop or large on-casters kettle type and back to the smaller, square Japanese-style hibachi. When choosing your charcoal grill, be sure its ventilation is sufficient enough to allow proper air to spread your cooking fire around the coals evenly.

To prepare your fire, pile charcoal briquets into a pyramid at the center of the grill. If you have a kettle charcoal grill, there should be a smaller grill toward the bottom of the kettle, above the ventilation holes, on top of which you can pile the pyramid. Some hibachis also feature that lower grill. If you have a large pan-style grill, simple pile the pyramid in the middle of the pan.

After piling the briquets, coat them liberally with lighter fluid. You should see a glossy sheen on the coals for a few seconds after you do this. Allow the fluid to soak into the coals before you light two or three single coals, either with a match or a long-nosed propane-fueled lighter. If there is too much breeze to keep these coals lit long enough to spread around, you can spray a very small amount of lighter fluid over their small flames. That should be enough to begin spreading the fire around the coals.

Normally, depending on the size of your cooking fire and how much you plan to cook, it should take only fifteen minutes for the flames to dissipate and the coals to begin turning white as they heat completely on their inside. Spread them evenly and closely around your cooking area. When your coals are almost completely white, you can begin cooking your hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, chicken, or other barbeque foods.

However, many people prefer not to use petrochemicals to light BBQ grills charcoal. If you are one of them, there are two methods you can use. One is a chimney made from a gallon can with several half-inch holes drilled into the sides approximately half an inch from the bottom. Place a few crumpled sheets of newspaper into the can, leaving one or two ends to protrude when you place the can over your coal pyramid, and light those ends. Leave the chimney on the coals for approximately ten to fifteen minutes, then remove the chimney safely and spread the coals evenly and closely around your cooking area.

The second such method is an electric barbeque fire starter, usually made of a long or wide coil similar to an electric stovetop burner's coil, shaped in a loop. If you use one, be sure its electric wire is long enough not to have to set your grill up next to your home, or use an extension cord.

Place the starter into the charcoal BBQ grill first, then pile your charcoal on top of its coil. Leave it under the coals a few moments after the coals ignite before unplugging the starter and removing it from the grill very slowly. Let the starter rest on the nearest concrete ground to cool off completely; do not leave the starter resting on wood, on grass, or against your home.

Outdoor grills are mainly used to cook food without oil. Grilled foods are healthier and this is the main reason that many people prefer it. In addition, outdoor grilling becomes a social activity also, a good way to bond with family members or friends while eating.

Charcoal Grills simply do not have the ease of Natural Gas Grills when cooking a Bar-B-Que, but for serious BBQ artists it’s the ritual that counts. When you are thinking of buying a new Barbecue, think of how you want to do your cookouts. If you love to come home from work and throw something on the ~Barbie~, for a quick meal then Natural Gas Grill is the grill for you. However, if you only Bar-BQ on the weekends and you love the procedures of the real cookout experience buy a quality Charcoal Grill. There is really nothing about Charcoal Grills that is more convenient than with Natural Gas grills, but convenience is not everything and many people argue that the ritual associated with charcoal grills is simply part of having a Barbeque.

The last thing to consider and this is a big one, is safety. There are many schools of thoughts on this aspect. Some say that more accidents happen with Charcoal Grills but more serious accidents happen with Natural Gas Grills. Consider these factors and use them in your judgment as to whether you will buy a Natural Gas Grill or a Charcoal Grill. Charcoal Grills being so much lighter then the Gas Grills it is easier to tip them over. Using starter fluid is always dangerous and this is where most injuries occur with Charcoal Grills. Never, ever use starter fluid on the charcoal after the coals have been lit, you risk burning yourself and your food will taste like starter fluid and not barbeque. There is a greater risk of a flare up with charcoal but that by no means says it will not happen with Natural Gas Grills. Common sense tells you that you should keep both of them away from structures that can ignite. For the greatest safety when using a Charcoal Grill verses a Natural Gas Grill is to buy pre-soaked briquettes which need no starter fluid at all.

With a Natural Gas Grill you will not have to use starter fluid but you must be very attentive to the manufactures instructions. Little things like leaving the gas on too long before you hit the ignition button could be very dangerous. Heed the manufactures requirements for maintenance especially for hoses and the gas container, for leaks.

Safety is the utmost priority when it comes to all grills. Don’t drink and barbecue, wait until after the cooking to imbibe. Watch the children when the grills are lit, keep them far way from the hot grills. By just using a little common sense you should prevent all accidents from happening whether you have a Natural Gas Grill or a Charcoal Grill.

Last but not least, is the forever debate about flavor and this should be one of your considerations when buying a grill. Many BBQ chefs swear by the smoky flavor of the Charcoal Grill when cooking their steaks on a grill and would cook on none other. But on the other side of the coin many gas grillers say that there is no difference. There is a little truth in both of their statements. There was a blind study done where people where asked to taste two hamburgers, one from the Natural Gas Grill and one from the Charcoal Grill. None of them tasted a difference in the hamburgers but when it came to steaks on a grill, the juicy, smoky flavor from the Charcoal Grill won every time. To combat this, some manufactures of Natural Gas Grills have added flavor bars made out of ceramic to give the meat a more genuine BBQ flavor. The theory is that the bars catch the fat dripping from the meat and vaporizes it giving off a more smoky taste.

All of this information will by no means end the debate. If you can, buy a Natural Gas Grill and a Charcoal Grill giving you both options for your Bar-B-Que. If you purchase a small Charcoal Grill it will be portable to take on vacations or to a neighbor’s house for overflow cooking. Charcoal Barbecue Grills

Charcoal barbecue grills are fueled by burning charcoal. Either charcoal briquets or all-natural lump charcoal can be used, and there is in fact some debate among enthusiasts as to which is better. The advantage of briquets is that they are usually uniform in size and burn consistently. On the other hand, advocates of all-natural lump charcoal, claim that it produces a subtle smoky aroma that improves the taste of the food.

There are in fact quite a wide variety of charcoal barbecue grills that you can get.

The most common types are:

- Brazier - A charcoal pan made from sheet metal, usually on legs, with a wire cooking grid. The grid may be moved up and down to control the amount of heating.

- Hibachi - Similar in design to a brazier, but made from sheet steel or cast iron, and with two independent cooking grids. As with a brazier grill, heating is generally controlled by moving the grids up and down, although some hibachi grills do also have a venting system.

- Kettle - A design based on a hemispherical ball with a lid - the original kettle grill was created in 1951 by George A. Stephen, Sr., by sawing a metal buoy in half and adding a dome-shaped lid. Kettle grills contain a cooking grid and a charcoal grid, between which the charcoal is placed, and also incorporate a venting system and legs, as well as coming with a lid. Additionally some kettle designs also include an ash-catching tray, and wheels.
